LARKANA: Twenty-three couples tied the knot at a mass wedding held under the auspices of the district zakat and ushr committee here on Thursday night.

Sindh Minister for Education Nisar Ahmed Khuhro who was chief guest at the ceremony presented traditional gifts of Sindhi caps and Ajraks to the grooms and dupattas to the brides before the newlyweds were given a warm sendoff by the participants.

Each couple was gifted with Rs70,000 in cash and essential items of daily use to start their new life as they mostly belonged to poor families who could not have afforded dowry expenses, said Nooruddin Abro, chairman of the district zakat and ushr committee.

He said the committee planned to make the event a regular feature.

Larkana Commissioner Ghulam Akbar Leghari congratulated the newlyweds.
