Mango exports fetch $1.1m in five days

KARACHI: Pakistan has exported around 2,200 tonnes of mangoes, fetching $1.1 million, since the start of export season on May 20.
All Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable Exporters, Importers and Merchant Association’s (PFVA) Research and Development Chairman Waheed Ahmed said mango was being exported to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Iran, Afghanistan, CIS countries and Oman, among others.
He said the fruit was being exported for about $500 per tonne this season compared to $250 last year.
He attributed improved earnings to the government ban on using wooden boxes for fruit and vegetable exports.
Ahmed said a delegation of Iranian Quarantine Department is also coming this month to review the prospects of hot water treatment plants.
Some exporters are already making shipments to Iran after getting approval from the quarantine department.
Mango exports to Iran would rise further if plants are approved during the visit, he added.
Around 29 hot water treatment plants are operational this year as compared to last year’s three.
“Exporters are hopeful that mango shipments would cross the export target of 100,000 tonnes fetching $60 million compared to 94,000 tonnes ($48 million) last year,” he said.
Pakistan is expected to produce around 1.8 million tonnes mangoes this year.

$500 per tonne amounts to Rs.50 per Kg. Why are we selling it for this cheap, even for wholesale rates? And to think it was being exported for $250 last year (Rs. 25 per Kg). Why can't more profit be obtained?

Domestic prices of Banarasi Langda/ alfanzo mango is more than USD 1000 per tonne in India. How come that export prices of Pakistani mango is mere USD 500 only. Appears that export prices are bound to go up.

Pakistani mangoes are known as ' king of Mangoes'. Once I went to a West Indian shop keeper in London and asked for mangoes. There were crates from different countries. I said ," Make sure they are pakistani mangoes" and the shop keeper replied with a smile, " are there any other kind".

Send some to US, please, please. The biggest hurdle was lack of Hot Water Treatment and old style wooden boxes and now it seems that those problems have been solved. The Mangoes in US Food Retail Giants like Walmart, Krogers, Randazzoes, etc. have mostly Mexican and South American variety which is bitter, and raw, mostly greenish and people in US have no idea how a real Mango should taste like. If they get a taste of Pakistani Mango then America alone can import $1 Billion worth of Mangoes from Pakistan, the Pakistani Mangoes are so good, they are addictive. The Americans have a huge market, specially in Ice cream and juices category as well, so some Pakistani can think of value addition and sell Mango flavored Ice Creams and Mango Juice to American Market.

For the last 5 years that i hav been in saudi arabia, i always wondered why our mangoes, despite their superior taste were sent without proper packing making them soft n damaged.
I hope this year it will be a different story.

Focus on the North American market by complying with special packing and quarantine rules and reap the benefits. Do the exporters know that a single mango shipped to California for example from across the Wagah border fetches in three (3) dollars from the local grocery outlets.
Mango is the king of fruits and rightfully "Chaunsa" is regarded as the king of mangoes. There would be severe belly ache felt in our neighborhood if we succeed and gain a foothold in the US marketplace. Do not take my word for it. $100 million alone in mango exports can be garnished from this market. I feel inclined to single out "SHAN" food company whose recipes can be found across the length and breadth of the North American market, even in Alaska and more. Their marketing department is doing a wonderful job to such an extent that even the Indian stores find it hard to say no.

We get them here in Norway. The Pakistani mango is popular amongst the native population here also. As someone here mentioned earlier: With better management this could be a much bigger export.
There is so much good fruit in Pakistan, for all seasons, but the export potential of them all is not properly utilized due to poor management. Which makes me very sad.

Why export mangoes when they can fetch a higher price in Pakistan? Do the simple math; the export price of $500 per ton translates into only Rs.50 per Kg which is not worth it.

It is sad that many countries in the West use emerging markets to sell wine, olives, tomatoes, cheese etc. at exorbitant price.
Mangoes, oranges and melons alone can bring so much money from East Asia only. We dont make money from grapes, bananas, apples, apricot, peaches, cherries, strawberries and fig etc. Properly marketed (Value Addition) - we would be rich.

Please send some to Michigan, US. Or at least to Chicago, that is about 4 hours from where I live, but many Pakistanis travel 4 hours to Chicago, just to taste some good Pakistani Food, and for Mangoes I will travel 4 hours drive.

Last year India exported 19.27 Million tons of Mango whereas Pakistan only 90000 tons. This year Pakistan may increase its Mango export but still far far behind India in terms of exports.

Most people commenting here are ignorant... All this high export this year as India Mangoes cultivation is hit by early monsoon. This has given room for Pakistan and Bangladesh to export more. Do agree that having Water treatment plant have given pak and Bangladesh atleast that advantage to qualify for export. India is exporting there premium varities only to US and Europe this year as pricing is higher there.

@rahul1 Premium one's are Chaunsa and Ratoul. Then we have Sindhri, Langra, Daseri etc. I have tried mangoes from around the world (India as well) and trust me, the taste and aroma of Chaunsa can not be compared with any other. I believe some of Pakistani fruits - Golden apple, Swat Peaches, Red and Green Grapes are the best in the world.

In past fraud and corrupt builders have looted masses with the help of corrupt high officials and leaders. The price for 4-6 pakistani mangoes exported to Norway is approximatly 15 usd. What is the price in your country, please reply. I am not sure if that price is included VAT/tax, not sure that it is tax/vat on fruit.

Depending on variety, retail rates in India range from 40 to 80 rupees per kg in the peak season (80 to 160 Pak rupees) . Could be higher this year. RS 25 per kg is really low
