KARAK: At least five people were killed and 11 others injured in a road accident in a mountainous area here on Sunday.

According to police and hospital sources, a passenger van (C-9039 Peshawar) was going to Gurguri from Karak when the driver lost control over the vehicle while negotiating a sharp turn in Kunghara area in the Naripanos hills.

As a result, the vehicle plunged into a deep ravine, killing five passengers on the spot. They were identified as Gulnaz Begum, Shah Miran, Mosam Khan, Said Rehman and Badshah Khan.

The injured, who belonged to Khuram Mohammad Zai area of Banda Daud Shah, were identified as Mohammad Akbar, Nihal Khan, Mohammad Junaid, Afrasiab Khan, Mohammad Janan, Zainab Bibi, Khazrat Rehman, Waseeullah, Ms Kishwara, Amjad Ali and Waqas.

Local residents and police shifted the dead and the injured to the district headquarters hospital, Karak.

Meanwhile, the relatives of the injured persons staged a protest demonstration against absence of doctors at the hospital and chanted slogans against the hospital administration. They also pelted stones on the emergency ward and broke windowpanes and doors.

Later, the doctors reached the hospital and started treatment of the injured. The doctors stated that condition of some wounded persons was critical.
