ISLAMABAD: The newly established Islamabad Bar Council (IBC) on Saturday elected Shoaib Shaheen, a senior lawyer, its vice chairman.

The lawyers of Islamabad on May 2, 2015 elected five members of the IBC for a five-year term. On Saturday IBC members, Qazi Rafiuddin Babar, Haroon Rashid, Syed Wajid Ali Gillani and Faiz Jandran unanimously elected Shoaib Shaheen as vice chairman for a period of one year.

IBC meeting was held at the office of the advocate general office situated in the Islamabad High Court building in Sector F-8 Markaz as IBC does not have its own building.

The IBC members also elected Syed Wajid Ali Gillani as chairman executive committee. The election for chairman enrolment committee and chairman disciplinary committee has been deferred till next meeting.

After the establishment of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) in 2011, the lawyers had been demanding the establishment of a bar council for the Islamabad capital territory to handle matters related to the discipline and the issuance of practice licences to the local lawyers.

Earlier, such matters of Islamabad-based lawyers were dealt by the Punjab Bar Council (PBC). The IBC was established in 2013 through an act of the Parliament. Last year, advocate general of Islamabad was appointed and by virtue of his designation, he became chairman of the IBC.
