KARACHI: Sindh Minis­ter for Information and Local Government Sharjeel Inam Memon has appealed to the chief justices of the Supreme Court and the Sindh High Court to take notice of Dr Zulfikar Mirza’s activities and asked courts not to grant bail to “this criminal”.

Talking to the media after the assembly session on Wednesday, the minister said the provincial government wanted to establish its writ and the rule of law, but “criminals and unlawful activities” of Zulfikar Mirza were a hurdle in enforcing the law.

He said Dr Mirza and his armed supporters not only attacked police stations but also threatened policemen by open display of illegal weapons.

The minister said that it was not only an unlawful act but also a challenge for the government to establish its writ. However, he regretted, despite all those activities, Dr Mirza was granted bail and that act created a law and order situation.

Mr Memon said that Dr Mirza was using abusive language against the top PPP leadership, including women. He deplored that TV channels were airing those abuses and the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority was taking no action against those channels despite repeated requests by the Sindh government.

The minister said the government was facing difficulties in establishing its writ owing to free movement of the man who was violating all norms and law of the land, and creating a wrong impression about the judicial system.

Mr Memon said police were not sent to arrest Dr Mirza, but to protect him.
