QUETTA: The Balochistan Assembly on Saturday unanimously passed a resolution, calling upon the government to abolish checkposts in towns near the borders with Afghanistan and Iran to ensure smooth supply of necessary items to citizens.

The joint resolution tabled by Syed Liaquat Agha said that people of the border towns of Chaman, Taftan, Turbat and Panjgur were facing problems because trucks carrying essential items were stopped at security posts for checking which caused delay. The house demanded abolition of these posts.

Opposition member Husna Bano wanted to move a resolution condemning the federal information minister, but the chair did not allow it. The resolution was about a statement by the federal information minister in which he had reportedly criticised the standard of education being provided by religious seminaries.

Home Minister Mir Sarfaraz Bugti opposing the resolution said that the federal minister had not uttered any controversial words. When the chair put the resolution to vote, it was rejected by a majority of members.

Deputy Speaker Mir Quddus Bizenjo, who presided over the session, admitted an adjournment motion tabled by Ms Bano demanding a debate on a remote-controlled bomb attack on the vehicle of Opposition Leader Maulana Wasay on Friday night. Mr Wasay escaped unhurt in the attack. The speaker linked the motion to another motion for discussion in the next session.

The session was adjourned till Tuesday.
