ISLAMABAD: A man was arrested on the charge of defrauding the excise and taxation office (ETO) by submitting bogus payment receipts for the registration of vehicles.

Sources in the ETO told Dawn that during the last a couple of months scores of fee receipts submitted for the registration of vehicles were found bogus. As a result, the ETO officials launched an inquiry which showed that the fee receipts were submitted by some touts for the registration of vehicles, not by the owners themselves.

They said during vigilance mounted at the ETO office, a tout was taken into custody when he came to submit documents for the registration of a vehicle.

Later, he along with the owner of the vehicle was taken to the Industrial Area police station. During the interrogation, the man confessed to getting registered over 70 vehicles by submitting bogus fee receipts. Besides, he also told the investigators that he had a number of accomplices who were also involved in the illegal activity.

The officials said efforts were in progress to trace the accomplices and bring them to book.
