It’s a wish come true for Prince Charles: Prince William and Kate Middleton have welcomed a baby girl, fulfilling his wish for a granddaughter that he expressed during an official engagement on Thursday.

The baby, who weighs a healthy 8lbs 3oz, arrived at 8:34 BST, the Kensington Palace said in a statement.

The birth took place at the Lindo Wing at St Mary's Hospital where Prince George was born in July 2013.

Both Catherine and her daughter are "doing well", the statement added.

The princess is the first born into the Royal family for 25 years, the last being Princess Eugenie in 1990, reports The Telegraph.

No name has been decided on yet for the baby princess, who is fourth in line to the throne, taking her place behind her grandfather Prince Charles, father Prince William and brother Prince George.
