KARACHI: A policeman was shot dead and another sustained a bullet wound in an attack on their motorbike in the SITE area on Sunday when they were on their routine patrol, a senior official said.

He added that two police constables 40-year-old Mohammed Sadaqat and 35-year-old Adil Nawaz were attacked near the Pakistan Cable Chowk in SITE when they were riding a motorbike.

“The two policemen were attacked by armed motorcyclists,” said area sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) DSP Majeed Abbas.

“Adil Nawaz died on the spot and Sadaqat has sustained a bullet wound over his shoulder. The two policemen were taken to the Civil Hospital Karachi, where the injured constable was released after treatment.”

The city police force has been on target for the past more than a year. In 2014 a total of 142 law-enforcers were killed in separate attacks across the city.

Authorities said that they believed that active policing, ongoing targeted-operation and surge in lethal encounters with militants associated with banned outfits had resulted in counter attacks on law-enforcement agencies.

“As we all know that the police are actively engaged in operation against gangsters, criminals, militants and drug-peddlers in this [SITE] area, the fresh attack could be a kind of reaction to our efforts,” said the DSP.
