KARACHI: Except the candidate of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf, the remaining 13 candidates who lost the NA-246 by-election forfeited their security deposit under the election rules, it emerged on Friday.
According to the rules, a candidate has to secure one-eighth of the total votes polled in a constituency, otherwise he or she loses the security deposit of Rs4,000.
According to results announced by Returning Officer Syed Nadeem Haider, of the 357,801 registered voters in the constituency, 131,424 cast their votes in the Thursday by-poll, which was won by Muttahida Qaumi Movement candidate Kanwar Naveed Jamil by bagging 95,644 votes. Imran Ismail of the PTI was the runner-up and he got 24,821 votes.
The candidates who forfeited their security deposit are: Rashid Naseem of the Jamaat-i-Islami (9,056 votes); Hasan Pervez-Independent (209), Usman Moazzam of Pasban (93), Aslam Shah-Independent(78), Ashraf Ali Qureshi-Independent(68), Pervez Ali-Independent(67), Syed Zaheerul Hasan Quaderi-Independent(64), Mehfoozyar Khan-Independent(53), Ayub Sultan-Independent(32), Seema Zareen-Independent(31), Monem Zafar-Independent(31), Abdul Sattar Ansari-Independent(25) and Usman Kohistani-Independent(23).
The turnout of voters in the by-election on the NA seat dropped by 20 per cent from 56.54pc in the 2013 general elections to 36.72pc.
The results collected from the 213 polling stations in the constituency showed that 1,129 votes were rejected on technical grounds.
