LAHORE: The Punjab government on Thursday made through an amendment to ordinance overcharging by transporters an offence prescribing fine for its commission.

The Provincial Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Ordinance that was promulgated by the governor inserted a new clause of penalty for overcharging of fares in the original Provincial Motor Vehicles Ordinance, 965.

According to it, the first time overcharging carries a fine of Rs1,500. The second overcharging within six months of the first overcharging will amount to Rs3,000 fine and impounding of the transport vehicles for a minimum of 48 hours.

There is a fine of Rs4,000 and suspension of the route permit of the transport vehicles for three months in case of overcharging within three months of the second overcharging.
