PESHAWAR: "State children, not street children," were the words stressed upon by Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan's wife Reham Khan as she addressed a ceremony called for International Day for Street Children on Sunday.

Along with laying emphasis on the need to protect street children in Pakistan, Reham addressed Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain's offer to gift her a gold jewelry set and Imran a shalwar kameez suit on her maiden visit to Karachi on Thursday.

"I request Altaf Bhai...if he really wants to gift something, he should instead donate it to the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and for the welfare of street children," Reham said, talking to the media.

"Why would I need jewelry? PTI supporters are my jewels."

She further said that, "God has given me whatever was meant for me".

A lamenting Reham appeared critical of the disregard among the Pakistani nation pertaining to street children.

Reham said being an Islamic Republic, it is was the utmost responsibility of the Pakistani people, especially those belonging to the educated class, to play their part in protecting street children.

"We don't let our children out the gate alone, yet we see these children wandering on streets," she said.

She further stressed that it was not solely the government's responsibility to better the lives of street children.

"How can you sleep at night knowing a child between the age of eight and 10 is out on the road?," she rued.
