Moin sacked as chief selector, Azhar tipped as ODI captain

Pakistan's embattled chief selector Moin Khan, reprimanded by the cricket board for visiting a casino in New Zealand during the World Cup, has been be sacked from his position after a meeting of top officials on Saturday, a highly-placed source confirmed to DawnNews sports correspondent Emmad Hameed.
Moin, who received more flak publicly for his casino visit than his contentious team selection for the World Cup, has been offered another position in the PCB with his contract yet to expire.
PCB chairman Shahryar Khan met with former captain Wasim Bari, Salahuddin Ahmed, Azhar Khan, Haroon Rashid and Salim Jaffer during the meeting, raising speculation that Moin would be replaced by one of the men as the next chief selector.
The meeting also discussed potential candidates to take over as ODI captain after Misbah-ul-Haq's retirement from the limited-overs squad at the end of Pakistan topsy-turvy World Cup campaign. Wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed, Test batsman Azhar Ali, Mohammad Hafeez and Wahab Riaz's were being touted as possible contenders for the spot. But a source present at the meeting revealed that Azhar is all set to be announced as the new skipper of the ODI side while Sarfraz would be his deputy.
The 30-year-old Azhar, who played his last ODI in 2013 but is a regular of the Test side, was recommended by coach Waqar Younis and Misbah-ul-Haq as the best choice to lead the limited-overs side.
The Lahore-born top order batsman has played 39 Tests, scoring 2851 at average of 41.31, and 14 ODIs in which he has notched up 452 runs at 41. His strike-rates of 39 and 64 in Tests and ODIs have already prompted fans to liken him to Misbah.
Moin's chapter closed
Shahryar had earlier declared "chapter closed" in the Moin 'casino controversy' after a formal apology from the chief selector but it seems the former wicketkeeper's night out has cost him much more than he bargained for.
Shahryar said the PCB investigation found nothing contrary to Moin's statement that he had visited the casino in Christchurch, New Zealand, to have dinner with friends.
The 43-year-old Moin's presence with Pakistan's World Cup squad was subject to severe criticism in the local media and it was widely being reported that former captain was 'too involved' in the selection of the playing XI.
Moin was the chief selector and manager of the Pakistan team but relinquished the latter role before the World Cup.
He had been Pakistan's head coach for two months till the end of the 2014 World T20.

PCB- bring someone who is fair to Pakistan cricket. We still need stability in middle order batting. After Misbah's departure from ODI it is going to be even worse.
We still have a strong team if players are selected on merit . For example right middle order players would have changed the outcome of quarter final against Australia.

Haroon rashid, saleem jaffer, wasim bari. Is there no other cricketer in the cointry to become chief selector. When I was 10 yrs old they were the selectors and now I am 29 and still they are being considered.
Same goes for waqar as well. He already neen coach 3 times and I think when I will be fifty he will still be pak cricket coach.

No surprise here. PCB never made any sense. Yes Moin should have been sacked; even earlier than this. Not for visiting a casino but for sending a completely imbalanced team to the World Cup.
Of the four players touted to take reigns of Pakistan's ODI team, one was not even selected in the WC squad; one was sent back without playing a single WC game (despite shouting at the top of his voice that he will be fit for the second match); one was not considered good enough to merit selection in the playing eleven in first four matches of the tournament. If that is not a contradiction what else is?
On a side but equally important note, Raza Hasan's dope test came out positive. Sure the player should be punished, but PCB can not absolve itself of the blame if it can not handle its young talent properly.

One person Moin Khan responsible for the Pakistan failure at the World Cup is out clean bowled, however still there are some bad fishes in the pond and it has to be cleaned. The next should be Waqar Younis and his associates and the big fish who appointed all these failure in the managented should also must go.
A complete fresh blood in the Management of Pakistan cricket is a must, all tainted people who were involved in the past management should be overlooked.

Moin was made a scapegoat. What about the other top shot? Win and Loss are collective responsibility.If you know how to take credit you should also have moral courage to take responsibility for poor showing of the team. Wahab should have been made captain. My choice is not based on his performances in the world cup only. Reason for his permanent selection should be that he is the fastest bowler in Pakistan and he can bat a bit. Add to that his good fielding, communication skills and aggressiveness, he could be a good captain too.

Why not create slots like wicket keeper, bowlers, batsman and all rounder. Then assign 5 names to each slot and open it up for voting on the internet.
You register with the board to vote on all the slots. The most prevalent combination wins.

Azhar Ali is 30 already. Does not have world up experience and has strike rate of 64. While I agree he is a calm, level headed gentlemen, he will be 34 by the time next World Cup rolls around. That means it's hard to bet his strike rate would improve. He may not even be performing to be in the team. Think long term guys. Be strategic!! Think Sarfraz. He has u19 captaincy exp., World Cup experience, is an attacking player. He will improve further if given the confidence and appointment

This explains why PCB does not usually appoint a vice captain - the next captain is out of the current squad.
Assuming that Azhar will captain for 7 years, if we want a 22-year old captain next time, then he is now 15 years old. He should be appointed Azhar's deputy now because he s already qualified for being captain - not being in the squad.

Unlike Australia, in Pakistan, no one has to prove their worth for anything. Azhar Ali was tagged as the Test player. He hasn't even performed well in the recent outings. Last ODI played was in 2013. And now, he is the likely candidate to captain the ODI team. :-) Unbelievable. Rational has no meaning in the air we breath in Pakistan.

Azhar will be another Misbah. We have to rebuild the team and need shrewd leaders like Sarfaraz and Wahab. Get rid of Akmal, Maqsood and bring in talented cricketers on merit. Currently the best technical batsman PAKISTAN has is Asad Shafiq. He should be given confidence and made captain or else Wahab Riaz for his aggression approach and habit of rising on occasion.

That was a mistake,he should have been selected along side Asad Shafiq for the WC.
If they had been part of the team Pakistan would have crossed 300 runs in most of the matches.

The fault lies with players not with coaches,players are not ready to learn from their mistakes,they do not improve their skills,they do not perform in the ground as per plans and coaching lessons.
Under these circumstances,no coach can fix your batting failures.
I do believe coaches work hard with the players,I have often heard them say that in the ground players do not act as they are told.

Whoever is selected as captain will not be successful unless strict discipline and high level of professionalism is maintained at all levels including the board management. Randomness in selection policy must be avoided and selection must be based on merits only. Once selected young players must be given chance to settle and must be encouraged to improve academic achievements by initiating development programmes.

Pakistan cricket team doesn't need another Misbah, they need a Wasim! Wahab Riaz for ODI Captain! While the PCB is at making changes please sack Waqar Younis too along with Mushtaq Ahmed ( never understood what he was doing there in the first place).

Very good note. I agree with everything you say, except for the doping business. Indulging in banned substances is the responsibility of the player, not the PCB. The PCB is not the player's mother! Hasan needs to grow up, or should be banned for several seasons. Disciplining him is PCB's responsibility, not babying him.

Pakistan has no real ODI batsmen at the moment. Ahmad Shahzad's strike rate is 72, much lesser than Misbah's Actually. Azhar Ali can at best, bat at 70. Then we have Haris and Fawad Alam, both with the similar defenssive numbers. As Afridi is gone now, we surely need Sarfraz down the order.

Saeed Anwar mohammad yousaf inzi... And keep these old farts who played in the 70 and 80s out.. Cricket was different then..

All those who are against Waqar for not selecting Sarfraz must be out of their minds. Do they know what Sarfraz' scores were prior to the match against India. He scored the following: 18, 26, 19, 0, 5, 13, 1 in 7 matches. Yes he came back to form when played against SA but no one could count on him after the above scores. And the fans must stay realistic, Sarfraz is no Gilchrist, his average is still bellow 29. Said that, yes I like the kid and count on him to perform consistantly. AT the end do not forget how Waqar has fine tuned our mediocre bowlers to possibly the best attack in the whole world cup.

How does it make sense to make Azhar Ali the captain? What are his credentials? Has he got any prior captaining experience? He has not even played one day cricket for a couple of years. He also doesn't have the temperament for ODIs anyway.
The right choice has to be between Sarfaraz, Wahab, and Fawad Alam. Each of them are good aggressive one day players with a street fighter mentality that you need in a good captain.

@Asad .. I understand all the apprehension and destroying the urdu speaking (yes.. this an official term on many official papers) against Karachi which will lead to imbalance in power and give more strength to Mullahs, Jamaat, Wadairaas and Choudharies in the city....
However, my brother, my countryman... Moin Khan was born in pindi... He moved for some time to Karachi like some media folks do but then he moved back Lahore and his home has always been Punjab similar to the case of Saeed Anwar.

We have this guy performing and trained to lead since U19 now we are not utilizing him... I guess that is the issue with whole nation... we don't remember why we fought for this country, how the same politicians have looted us over and over again...

BUT why?! Azhar Ali didn't and still doesn't have a place in ODI team with the strike rate of mid 60. He was not in the plan for World Cup? Now all of a sudden Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed and is talking about Azhar as a captain??? If he is good to be captain then why he wasn't selected in the World Cup!!! Sarfraz or Fawad is the better choice!!! Much better choice!! Don't worry about sarfraz's English abilities... He is a solid cricketer with positive and aggresive attitude. Azhar sure has Misbahic style but style was only good back in eighties and nineties... Cricket has changed a lot. He my do good in sub continent but will struggle in seaming and bouncy wickets. Next World Cup is in England and as cricket changing we will need to prepare a different breed of cricketers for that.

Best choice considering the talent for leadership available. He is available for at least 5 years, provided he keeps his batting form going up. Besides, PCGB should seriously think about investing in their leadership skills. Such as providing them knowledge and skills on better communication, inter personal interaction, human behaviours under various circumstance, how not to react and keep cool under serious stress, some basic analytical skills even when they are on the ground. These skills are required for efficient leadership. Azhar need to keep his batting form in order to qualify in the team selection. The rest should be invested by the Board. Keep the vice-captain also involved all such trainings for sustainability.

Politics aside, Shahtryar should have consulted Imran Khan and Javed Miandad the most astute cricketers we've had even if you disagree with their other affairs. Doesn't sound like bad choices though. Both Azhar and Sarfraz have a feistry competitive spirit, the kind of mental strength that is the difference between winning and losing at this level. There's lots of big hitting talent around, but it's the mental capability that provides the edge.

Pakistan has potential to be amongst 'top 3' in ranking, but if Pakistan improves their ranking than PCB management, Selection committee, Misbah and Waqar would look bad and ill of Pakistan cricket would become obvious. So, something has to be done ... and that is what been done. Make Azhar Captain, so that Pakistan run rate do not improve and that means team potential of making runs in 50 overs decreases from present 225 under Misbah to 200 under Azhar. It also means, less ODI successes and Pakistan ranking going further down.

Let me try defending PCB. You see, if we choose a good player as captain, he will not be able to continue his form. We need someone who (1) has good repute with PCB , and (2) can tell player what PCB would like them to do in the field by staying staying long by dint of his ability to tuck, tuck, tuck, ..., I could go for ever.

Stop Captaincy musical chair.Build 22 players for next 4 year for ODI with fresh new players.Make them fight for 11 places for national squad.If needed start building with complete new talent.They won't be worse than Umar Akmal or Sohaib Maqsood.Make them play on green top and send them to play league cricket in England and Australia region.Rest thing will follow by itself.Bowling continue with 4 prong pace attack and include Amir as soon as he is back.Results will follow by itself,any body leading Australia would always win.It all depend on players playing for team and not Captain alone.They will not wishes of fan to win because there hard work will win the matches.

We require our young players to play cricket outside pakistan, in SA, England, Australia etc. playing for other teams is the only way to improve our fielding standards. We have tried and tested all possible avenues within pakistani team we cannot improve. Our domestic t-20 is pretty ordinary , we need 35-50 young players to play and compete in international circuit
