QUETTA: Security forces claimed to have killed seven militants in Balochistan's troubled Dera Bugti district on Wednesday.

Spokesman Frontier Corps (FC), a para-military force, told DawnNews that the forces conducted a search operation in the Pir Koh area of Dera Bugti

He said that seven militants involved in blowing up gas pipelines and targeting security forces were killed during the operation.

Sabotage of gas pipelines is a characteristic tactic of tribal militants and is frequently witnessed in Balochistan. However, the province also suffers from attacks carried out by Taliban militants.

The Spokesman stated rocket launchers, improvised explosive devices, bombs and other weapons were recovered from the possession of militants. The militants belonged to a defunct militant group operating in the area, he said.

Earlier this year, at least 15 suspected militants were killed during an exchange of fire with FC personnel in Kharan.

During the encounter, one FC man was killed and another three were injured during the clash in the Basima area of Kharan.

The FC exchanged fire with the suspected militants and seized a huge quantity of arms and ammunition from the militants who were allegedly involved in subversive activities in the area, including bombings and targeted killings.

Militants have recently intensified attacks against security forces and national installations in Balochistan, plagued by an insurgency and growing sectarian killings for more than a decade.
