NAB arrests two bank employees in fraud case

PESHAWAR: The National Accountability Bureau, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has arrested two bank employees for allegedly embezzling approximately Rs55 million in SNGPL utility bills.

In a statement issued here on Monday, the NAB said that it received a complaint regarding embezzlement of huge amount in respect of SNGPL utility bills by employees at the Al-Barka Bank’s Hayatabad branch. The NAB taking cognizance started inquiry into the matter, which revealed that bank employees, M Irfan and Qazi Wajidullah Khan, in connivance with others, used to pocket the amount of utility bills paid by SNGPL consumers through the bank’s Hayatabad branch.  

The statement said that the two employees concealed their wrongdoings by manipulating bank record by generating and forwarding fake scrolls to SNGPL. The two employees kept on embezzling the funds from November 2009 to April 2014, said the statement, adding that NAB seized all the fake scrolls and other relevant record in this regard. 

The statement said that NAB was vigorously pursuing the case and important disclosures were expected from the arrested persons which could lead to further arrests in the case. 

The NAB said that the persons would be presented in the Accountability Court, Peshawar, for obtaining their physical remand for further investigations. —Bureau Report
