KARACHI: The All-Sindh Boxing Championship being held under the aegis of Pakistan Rangers Sindh in collaboration with the Sindh Boxing Association (SBA) got off to a colourful start here at the Peoples Sports Complex on Monday.

Director General Rangers, Sindh, Maj Gen Bilal Akbar, inaugurated the three-day event featuring eight teams — five divisions namely Karachi, Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, Sukkur and Larkana, and three outfits of volatile Lyari.

Accompanied by Commandant Ghazi Rangers, Col Amjad Iqbal Jamil, Wing Cdr 93 Wing Lt Col Sohail Ahmed and Pakistan Boxing Federation (PBF) president Doda Khan Bhutto the DG Rangers took salute of the competing teams.

National boxer Shehroz Kachi and Fida Hussain Baloch took oath on behalf of the competing pugilists, referees and judges.

Welcoming the outstation players and other participants of Lyari, Maj Gen Bilal said sports, particularly boxing, football and cycling had been an identity of Lyariites.

The crowd replied in negative when he sought their response to the query: “Is extortion of money or other anti-social activities is identity of Lyariites”.

He disclosed that an all-Sindh football tournament on similar lines will be organised here next month.

The DG Rangers Sindh assured PBF president of lending full support for staging an international boxing event in Lyrai.

During his stay at the Peoples Sports Complex, the DG Rangers also witnessed some bouts.

Other senior officials of Sindh Rangers, PBF referees, judges commission president Younus Pathan, Sindh Boxing Association officials Abid Brohi, Asghar Baloch, 1972 Olympian Malang Baloch, former internationals Mohammad Siddiq, Sher Mohammad, M. Rustum Baloch and Abdul Khaliq were among others who attended the opening ceremony.

Meanwhile, 40 first-round quarter-final bouts were held on the opening day. Semi-finals will take place on Tuesday while curtain falls on the event on Wednesday.
