PESHAWAR: At least three peace volunteers were killed while two others were injured on Monday in a bomb blast in Tirah Valley of Khyber Agency.

Official sources say that the blast occurred in one of the pickets of the Tauheedul Islam Peace Committee members near Tirah's Nari Baba area.

The sources say that the casualties occurred in what is believed to have been a remote-controlled blast.

Pakistan's military had launched the operation ‘Khyber-1’ last year with air strikes against militant hideouts in areas under the Mangal Bagh-led group’s control in Tirah and Bara.

The operation was launched amidst Zarb-i-Azb, a full-fledged military operation being conducted by the army against Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and other militants in the North Waziristan tribal region.

Khyber is one of Pakistan’s seven semi-autonomous regions governed by tribal laws and lies near the Afghan border.

The Taliban and other Al Qaeda-linked groups who stage attacks in both Pakistan and Afghanistan are also known to have strongholds in the zone.
