HYDERABAD: Hyderabad PPP organised a rally and held a demonstration outside the local press club on Tuesday against former Arbab Ghulam Rahim, Liaquat Ali Jatoi, Dr Rahila Gul Magsi and other opposition leaders for misguiding people over the cane growers-sugar mills dispute.

Led by PPP district president Zahid Bhurgari and other office-bearers, the protesters took out the rally from the district council offices and converged on the press club raising slogans against the leaders.

Mr Bhurgari told the participants that the Sindh government accepting cane growers demand fixed Rs182 for 40kgs of cane, and claimed that all sugar mills in the province were paying this rate to growers.

He said some of the mills had moved the Sindh High Court against the notified rates but their petition was rejected and now they had moved the apex court.

He alleged that the disgruntled leaders like Dr Arbab and Mr Jatoi were misguiding farmers against the democratic government because such people could not even “breathe in a democratic dispensation”.

It provides yet more proof that the undergirding logic of public authority in Pakistan is legal and extra-legal coercion rather than legitimised consent.
