KARACHI: A man was killed and 12 others were injured in a grenade attack in the Malir City area on Monday, police said.

They said that some people were sitting at a playground in Daud Goth during the loadshedding hours in the evening when unknown men threw a grenade and fled.

The explosion left 13 people wounded. They were rushed to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where doctors declared one of them dead.

Dr Seemin Jamali, the head of the JPMC’s emergency department, identified the deceased as Mohammad Habib, 25, a resident of Malir-15.

The wounded were identified as Mohammed Hanif, Yasin, Adnan, Waqas, Sohail, Yusuf, Shabbir, Abdul Rasheed, Abdul Aziz, Mohammed Ashraf, Abdul Ghaffar and Zakir Hussain.

She added out of the 12 wounded, six were being operated upon. The condition of a 12-year-old boy, who sold boiled eggs in the area, was critical, she added.

“The incident appears to be an outcome of infighting between two rival gangs in the area,” said Malir SSP Rao Anwar.

He believed that the grenade attack was allegedly carried out by Akbar alias Malaria, a member of the Uzair Baloch group, at a spot frequently used by Javed alias Munna Brohi and his men, allegedly associated with the Baba Ladla gang.

Brohi used to run a gambling den at the same place where the incident occurred, said the SSP.

He said that a few days ago Akbar Malaria’s house in Aansu Goth was attacked with a grenade and today’s incident might be its reaction.
