NEW YORK: A 19-year-old American woman who tried to go to Syria to help the Islamic State militants was sentenced to four years in prison by a Denver (Colorado) court on Friday.

The woman, Shannon Conley told the US District Judge Raymond P. Moore at her sentencing she was misled while pursuing Islam and learned only after her arrest about atrocities committed by the extremists she was taught to respect.

According to court documents, she intended to become a nurse in an ISIS camp. She is a Colorado certified nurse’s aide.

CNN said though the judge initially cited how Conley needs psychiatric care, he sided with prosecutors in the end.

“What is it that will cause others to stop” in the future, Judge Moore said during sentencing.
