ISLAMABAD: Denm-ark has announced a $1.6 million grant for people displaced by fighting in North Waziristan and Khyber tribal regions with focus on women and children. The UNHCR has been assigned to utilise the money through its operations.

Danish Ambassador Jesper Moller Sorenson while announcing the grant on Saturday said the situation in Pakistan was complex because of frequent conflicts and emergencies.

Majority of about 1m IDPs (internally displaced persons) in current situation are women and children without any social cover, he said, adding: “Our contribution serves to ensure that displaced people, especially women and children with special needs, have equal access to all services offered by the government and humanitarian actors.”

Women and children constitute 81 per cent of the total enlisted caseload from Khyber Agency.

The Danish contribution would ensure families have adequate tents, non-food item family kits, which include emergency shelter materials, and core relief items for protection against the cold winter.

Additionally, support is being provided to families sheltered in schools, public buildings, temporary settlements and community and religious centres. The UNHCR is also establishing new camps and providing technical support on camp management and coordination.
