KARACHI: At least two Rangers personnel were killed and a civilian was wounded in an encounter with unknown armed men in Karachi's Landhi No. 2 area on Tuesday morning.

Area residents claim that the Rangers' raiding team came under gunfire and a grenade was also lobbed at them when they entered Landhi No. 2's Khurramabad area near the outskirts of Karachi.

Two personnel, who were injured in the attack, succumbed to their wounds while they were being shifted to a hospital for treatment.

Hospital sources confirmed that an area resident was also injured during the exchange of fire.

Additional contingents of Rangers and police also reached the spot and cordoned off the area, sealing all exit and entry points.

The operation, which was conducted upon receiving intelligence regarding the presence of people associated with a banned outfit, was being lead by Rangers personnel while policemen were also present to provide backup to the raiding team.

A house-to-house search — narrowed down to three lanes — was under way whereas eight to 10 suspects were also taken into custody.

Area residents also said that they saw some people fleeing from the scene but the claims were denied by a security source.

Fear and panic gripped the area after the firing and blast.

Khurramabad lies adjacent to Rehri Goth and Sherpao Colony in Landhi Town.
