Multan to hang first death row inmate, January 7

MULTAN: A death warrant was received by Multan Central Jail authorities today for Shabbir alias "Dr" alias "Fauji" for his involvement in the murder of a policeman.

The death row convict is set to be hanged on January 7 (Wednesday).

Hailing from Southern Punjab, Shabbir had reportedly exhausted all options to appeal his case, which led to his death warrant being issued.

This would be the first hanging at the Multan jail. There are nine more death row convicts present in the jail at this time.

3 to hang in Sukkur

Sukkur Central Jail authorities received the death warrants of three inmates who were convicted for the 2001 murder of then Karachi's Director Defence, Syed Zaffar Ali Shah.

The three convicts are set to hang early morning on January 13 (next Tuesday). Arrangements have been made for the families of the three inmates to visit them one last time.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had approved the lifting of Pakistan's long-upheld moratorium on the death penalty after a Taliban attack in Peshawar killed 148 people, including more than 130 schoolchildren. A series of hangings have followed the decision, despite much global criticism. Only those death row inmates convicted on terror-related charges have been hung.

I don't see a point in making the hanging date public as it is being relayed to the convict's supporters too. To me, it is a message or invitation to the supporting organisation to make all the efforts to protect their loyalist before the given date.

I suggest a better strategy is to hang these criminals and thereafter announcing the death news. This way their supporters/terrorists would not be able to attempt to freed them from captivity.

I hope they won't published the date and place exact as it could help terrorist to attack like in Banns and Dera Ismail Khan jail atracks it will createn unnecessary problems for the prisoners and prison administration staff.

Hang them ALL quickly who are fairly found to be guilty of heinous crime deserving death penalty. That's the only way Pakistan might get some reprieve. Don't listen to those BLEED HEART LIBERALS.

Public should be informed about the date after death sentence have been carried out, unless government is inviting ALL the public to watch the "hanging" in public square.

Fair point that law enforcement agencies should not made the dates public but still news are going out via family and other sources. So why not to public it before time so that these heinous criminals can see what is happening. Just imagine the pain in the heart of family leaving them in jail alive last. Where were they when their kids were killing others. No mercy for terrorism n terrorists.

@AJamal This is justice. As per Islamic law and also as per the law of the land. Why you call the implementation of the awarded punishment a vengence is beyond me. Why should we keep the convicted murderers and terrorists alive for an indefinite period at tax payer's expense when those criminals have duly exhausted all available legal avenues ?

@Faiz We don't need to make a spectacle out of a routine dispensation of justice. Simple notification of the executions would be enough to reinforce confidence in the the legal system as well as to serve as a deterrence for any would-be perpetrator of heinous crime.
