Germany ready to mend fences between Pakistan and Afghanistan‏

QUETTA: German Ambassador to Pakistan, Dr Cyrill Nunn on Monday vowed to mend fences between Pakistan and Afghanistan for a durable peace in the region.

"A stable Afghanistan is in Pakistan's interest," the ambassador told a function with regard to conservation of water organised by Taraqee Foundation at a local hotel.

Amjad Rashid, the Chief of Taraqee Foundation also spoke on the occasion and shed light over the issues relating to Balochistan.

"Similarly a prosperous Pakistan is in Afghanistan's interest," he added. Dr Cyrill said that Germany was ready to help in bringing the two neighbors closer to each other.

Regarding Iran, the ambassador stated that his country wants to have a negotiated settlement of issues relating to Iran.

He said the German government was committed to support and help Afghan refugees living inside Pakistan.

"We are not running out of Afghanistan, rather we will continue to support its government," the ambassador said.

He said Germany would train Afghan security personnel and civil servants to improve the situation in the impoverished country.

The ambassador spoke at length about the geographical importance of Balochistan and its natural resources.

Federal Minister for Borders, General (retd) Qadir Baloch while addressing the function said that the region (Pakistan and Afghanistan) had in the past been turned into a nursery of terrorism.

"US and the West turned this area into a hub of terrorism to oust the Russians from Afghanistan," Qadir Baloch recalled.

The federal minister stated that extremism in this part of world was posing a threat to peace in the world.

"If effective measures are not adopted, then it would endanger world peace," he added.

The minister also mentioned that both Pakistan and Afghanistan have committed to eradicate terrorism from the region.

"Both countries have agreed in principle to wipe out terrorism," he said.
