QUETTA: Militants killed two policemen in Shalkot area of Quetta, the capital of volatile Balochistan province, police said on Wednesday.

Sariab Superintendent of Police (SP) Imran Qureshi told Dawn that armed men opened fire at policemen and killed one personnel on the spot. He said the other policeman was shifted to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Qureshi said the assailants sped away on their motorcycle after the attack. Police and Frontier Corps personnel reached the spot and started investigation into the incident.

"It seems to be a targetted killing," Qureshi said. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

Quetta and other parts of Balochistan have seen a sharp rise in incidents of targetted killings and bomb explosions.

This incident has come a day after militants targetted vehicle of Adviser to Chief Minister Balochistan on Education Sardar Raza Mohammad Bareech in Joint Road area of the city.

Sardar Bareech remained unhurt in the attack, however, two other people were injured.
