JERUSALEM: Israeli police say four worshippers have been killed in an attack on a Jerusalem synagogue.

Police spokeswoman Luba Samri says six people, including two policemen, were wounded in the assault, which was described as a “terrorist attack".

Samri says two assailants entered the synagogue on Tuesday with knives, axes and guns and attacked worshippers.

“Two terrorists, apparently from east Jerusalem, entered a yeshiva (Jewish seminary) in Har Nof and attacked worshippers with axes and a pistol,” she said.

“The two terrorists were neutralised,” she added, using a police euphemism for killed.

The violence comes amid high tensions in the city, with a wave of attacks by Palestinians on Israelis killing at least six people in recent weeks.
