ABU DHABI: New Zealand closed the second day of the first Test at 15-0 in reply to Pakistan's huge first innings total of 566-3 declared in Abu Dhabi on Monday.

The Kiwis closed with Brendon McCullum on nine and Tom Latham on five not out as the tourists still trail by 551 runs.

Pakistan's batsmen enjoyed another run-feast with Younis Khan scoring 100 not out for his 28th century — fourth in five innings — while Misbah-ul Haq hit an unbeaten 102 for his third in as many innings. Opener Ahmed Shehzad made a career best 176 while Azhar Ali scored 87.

Corey Anderson finished with 2-68 for New Zealand while Ish Sodhi took 1-162.

During Pakistan's batting, opener Shehzad had fractured his skull. An unexpected bouncer by Corey Anderson hit him on the head and he fell right onto the stumps, giving away a wicket to New Zealand.

Shehzad hit a spirited century and shared a record-breaking opening stand of 178 with Mohammad Hafeez to steer Pakistan to take complete control on the first day. Anderson got Mohammad Hafeez caught and bowled when he looking solid at 96.

By the lunch on day two, Azhar Ali, unbeaten on 73, was accompanied by star batsman Younis Khan as Pakistan moved to 347/2.

Pakistan's top batting order was unforgiving and scored 269 runs at the loss of just one wicket by the end of first day's play at the Zayed International Cricket Stadium.

New Zealand's hopes faded when leg-spinner Ish Sodhi could not come good after his brilliant show of in the drawn side game against Pakistan 'A'.
