Veteran Indian actor Sadashiv Amrapurkar, known for his villainous roles in famous movies Sarak, Ishq and Arth Satya breathed his last on Monday morning at the Kokil Dhirbubhai Hospital in Mumbai, Hindustan Times reported.

According to The Indian Express, the 64-year-old actor was put on life support after his condition got critical over the last few days. Following a lung infection, he was admitted to the hospital two weeks back.

Hailing from a Marathi family, Amrapurkar was born as Ganesh Kumar Narwode and made his film debut with Govind Nihalani’s stellar film Ardh Satya in 1983. His role as a mafia don was lauded by audience and critics alike and got him many awards, including the Filmfare award for 'Best Supporting Actor'.

He also became the first ever actor to bag the Filmfare award for 'Best Performance in a Negative Role' for his brilliant performance as a vicious eunuch running a brothel in Mahesh Bhatt’s film Sadak (1991).

Though he was associated with villainous roles, the actor started appearing in comical roles after the 1990s and was seen in films like Ankhen, Aunty No 1 and various other films. He was last seen onscreen in Dibakar Banerjee’s shortfilm Bombay Talkies in which he did a cameo role.

The actor is survived by his wife and three daughters, one being internationally acclaimed director Reema Amrapurkar.

Indian Prime Minister Narendera Modi and celebrities, including Amitabh Bachchan, Anil Kumble and Mahesh Bhatt mourned his loss on Twitter:
