GUJRANWALA: The Punjab government plans to install about 3,000 automated meter reading (AMR) meters against three phase connections, including tubewells, to resolve the billing issue.

The government has forwarded the plan to the Pakistan Electric Power Company (Pepco) and all distribution companies, Wasa, TMOs and the Irrigation Department across the province.

At a briefing here on Monday, District Officer (coordination) Tariq Zafer said the list of such connections where such meters were essential to be installed to resolve the dispute of exorbitant billing were being prepared for forwarding it to higher authorities.

SHARP SHOOTERS: The police administration will deploy squads of sharp shooters at all sensitive places in the division for the protection of high profile figures and religious leaders and to maintain law and order in Muharram.

RPO Syed Dilawer Husain said on Monday that modern machines and weapons had been provided to the squad that would perform its their duty in the range of three kilometres to avoid any untoward incident.

He pointed out that these squads were being deployed for the first time in the division for security purpose during Muharram.

INJURED: A man injured his wife with a club over a land dispute in Garjakh on Monday.

Reports said Ferzana had refused to transfer a two-and-a-half marla plot gifted to her by parents to her husband Zaman. Her husband fell into a rage and beat her up with a club.

She was admitted to DHQ Hospital in a critical condition.

Garjakh police were looking into the matter.

CRUSHED TO DEATH: An elderly man was knocked down and killed by a motorcycle in Ladheywala Warraich on Hafizabad Road on Monday.

Reports said Ramzan, 70, was crossing the road when motorcyclist Nadeem hit him. He died while being taken to DHQ Hospital.

Police have arrested the accused while the body has been handed over to the heirs.
