Political parties united for upholding democracy, says PM Nawaz

NEW YORK: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Thursday said that all political parties were united for upholding democracy in Pakistan and for the supremacy of the Constitution, DawnNews reported.

The premier was addressing the Pakistani community in New York after meeting United Nations General Secretary Ban Ki Moon and other important international figures during his visit to the United States.

Nawaz said that those staging sit-ins against his government had made ambitious plans but the nation did not support them.

He said that the government is fully functional despite the protests while those opposing it had failed.

The prime minister said the attacks launched on the Parliament House and the Pakistan Television (PTV) network Headquarters were hardly similar to any of the attacks found in the country's history.

Nawaz said that his party participated in the 2013 general elections as an opposition party, adding that rigging allegations against the Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz (PML-N) were baseless.

The PM also said that the previous caretaker government was nominated by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), but his party won a landslide victory in the elections.

The prime minister is currently in New York to attend the annual session of the United Nations General Assembly and is expected to deliver a speech today.

Total of 15 constituencies opened. All 15 found massive to have major irregularities. Your Speaker NA first gets stay orders. Once stay orders are over after more than a year, he now says he has no confidence in the Judge. ECP says massive fraud. Additional Sec ECP at the time of elections says massive fraud. All parties say massive fraud including PMLN. But you seem to love power and the money that comes from the abuse of that power so much that you are unwilling to open your eyes. That sir is your and Pakistan's tragedy. Make no mistake you will be held accountable sooner or later.

Pls. Mr. Prime Minister once again you are telling lies to the nation that rigging was not done in 2013 election. Let me remind you that opposition party themselves said that rigging was done in your presence in the Parliament and you did not say anything at that time coz they are your partners. A case has already been registered against you in SC for blaming the army for no reason.

The perception being created abroad by PML-N is that THEY are the wronged party.......and they are doing this by playing the democracy card. Hopefully those abroad will see through this sorry gimmick.

He has no choice but to hold up the national flag. At this point and time our entire institutions are attacked with their credibility. Basically we are telling the world that there is not a honest sole in this country as Institutions are run by Bureaucrats of all levels. This on top of our reputation that we already have internationally where our people are always the one to find any loop whole to avoid rules any where in the world. So yes , as still our PM he has to look in to the eyes of the world and say we still believe in democracy.

@Amin Ansari Not every thing is black and white. And in a democracy people are entitled to have an opinion. These days if one is not agreeing with IK or Qadri one is labeled as corrupt or a friend of NS. This must be the influence of Qadri type democracy that is more of a dictatorial style .

We in teh 21st century are a bit aware of the wrongdoings of our democratic governments of the past and of the present. Please, don't make fool of us anymore, Mr Sharif! What democracy you are talking about? The one which allow you to travel to New York in a private chartered airplane than your own national carrier. We wont have space here to keep counting the blessings of democracy bestowed upon the politicians of Pakistan by the token word 'democracy'. Such as shame to misuse this sacred word and a system of government for your personal extortion!!!

@Rj It's Nawaz who got nurtured by a dictator and refuses to resign despite all the evidence of his incompetence, looting, and corruption. In a democratic culture, PMs are too ashamed to be in office with so many charges against them, but Nawaz seems to have no shame. People agree with IK and TuQ because their criticisms of Nawaz are so logical and factual and undeniable that it is hard to dispute them, and also because they are no longer so scared to speak their minds.

Dear PM, please wake up. Nation is supporting sit-in for the prosperity of Pakistan, it appears that your projections are based on few cities wherein people support you religiously but in rest of the cities no support at all. Attack on PTV is highly condemnable but you will appreciate that attack on Supreme Court is also highly condemnable. As regards to rigging, we being a nation very well understand that what happens on the day of election? So, please reconsider your statement about transparency of elections. Caretaker Government officials were also appointed with your consent. Now you are saying that previous govt. nominated by other party. Please note that we being a nation are clearly looking at what is happening and why this is so.
