KARACHI: A charity worker was shot dead while another critically wounded in Orangi Town while they were collecting donations for a welfare hospital located in Punjab on Sunday evening, Mominabad police said.

They added that 35-year-old Saleem Tariq and 40-year-old Hanif Tufail were shot at and wounded at a restaurant in Faqir Colony by armed motorcyclists.

They were taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where Tariq died during treatment while Tufail was admitted with critical wounds.

The Mominabad police official said the victims were busy collecting donations for the Sahara Hospital, when they were attacked.

“We are also investigating as to whether they have been attacked for being mistaken for police officers since they were wearing clothes of the police uniform colours,” said the officer. The victims hailed from Punjab.

Two ‘gangsters’ killed in Lyari

Two suspected gangsters were shot dead in an ‘encounter’ jointly carried out by Rangers and police in Lyari on Sunday morning, officials said. The Sindh Rangers conducted an intelligence-based operation against gangsters in Rangiwara of Lyari. On seeing the officials, the suspects opened fire and in ‘retaliatory fire’ two of them were killed, said a spokesperson for Rangers.

The official identified the deceased as Aziz, alias Chwani; and Zakir, alias David; alleged members of the Mulla Nisar/Uzair Baloch group.

They were allegedly involved in various targeted killings, kidnappings, extortion and other crimes, claimed the official.

The officials said their one accomplice had also been arrested and weapons were seized from him.

Meanwhile, a man was found shot dead in Chakiwara on Sunday.
