HYDERABAD: About 450 students of 50 government and private schools of Hyderabad and other districts including Tando Mohammad Khan, Jamshoro, Dadu and Sanghar participated in the Hyderabad round of the ‘10th Dawn in Education —National Spelling Bee Competition 2014’ held in the Mumtaz Mirza Auditorium of the Sindh Museum on Saturday.

The event is organised by the Dawn Media Group in collaboration with the US embassy.

Over 100 teachers as well as parents of the participating students also attended the programme that started at 8:30am and continued till 5pm.

The particpants were categorised in three age groups — 9-11, 12-14 and 15-17.

Hyderabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry senior vice president Turab Ali Khoja was the chief guest and Hyderabad SP Haider Raza was the guest of honour.

Six winners, judged by the Oxford University Press, of the Hyderabad round will now participate in the regional championship, to be held on October 25 in Karachi.

The next round of the championship will be held in Sukkur on Sept 24 and the National Championship will be held in Islamabad in November.
