MUZAFFARABAD: The death toll in rain-related incidents in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) has swelled to 64, as the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) revised the figure on Sunday following reports of 16 more deaths.

Razia, 15, and Ruqayya, 12, died on Sunday after they were struck by a landslide in Hotar village while Mohammad Tahir and Haji Mohammad Rafiq were killed on Saturday night after a tree fell on them in Soli village, deputy commissioner Haveli Raja Mohammad Irshad told Dawn.

He said 20 people were confirmed dead while nine others, who had gone missing in different areas, were presumed dead.

The deputy commissioner said since Haveli district was devoid of mobile phone service and most roads were blocked due to landslides, confirmation of these cases was taking time.

The SDMA has, however, mentioned 29 deaths in Haveli district in their record.

SDMA secretary Mohammad Akram Sohail told Dawn on Sunday that 14 people had died in Sudhnoti, seven in Kotli, six in Poonch, three in Bhimber, two in Mirpur and one in Muzaffarabad.

The number of injured persons had also swelled to 109, he said.
