KARACHI:The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has deferred its decision on going ahead with resignations of party lawmakers from the federal and provincial assemblies.

The decision came after Hussain and Maulana Fazlur Rehman of the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) held consultations over the prevailing political deadlock in Islamabad.

Speaking to Dawn, MQM lawmaker Farooq Sattar confirmed that party chief Hussain took the decision after speaking to JUI-F’s Rehman.

Both leaders agreed that although democracy in its current form may not be ideal, it may not help to “give up so soon” and that reforming the existing system was the way forward.

The leaders also discussed the situation that has resulted in parts of the country following heavy rains with at least 110 dead across Punjab, Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.

Earlier on Wednesday, federal and provincial lawmakers belonging to the MQM had submitted their resignations to the party after Hussain had instructed them to do so.

Hussain later spoke of widespread corruption and wrongdoing in his party and gave one week to members of MQM's top decision-making forum, the coordination committee, to mend their ways.
