FAISALABAD: Rickshaw and wagon drivers have threatened to go on a wheel-jam strike if traffic wardens continue the practice of doing frequent challans with heavy fines.

Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, Pasban Rickshaw Drivers Union and Wagon Owners Association president Ijaz Hussain said that traffic wardens were focusing only on challans rather than regulating the traffic.

He said in June last the traffic police had imposed a fine of Rs20 million on motorists, most of them were poor rickshaw and wagon drivers.

He said that practical suggestions had been given repeatedly to traffic police officials for improvement of the traffic system, but to no avail.

Mr Hussain demanded of the Punjab government to reduce the amount of fine on small vehicles.

He said the registration of cases against drivers without any justification was a violation of the human rights and the vehicle ordinance which would not be tolerated.
