ISLAMABAD: Former president Pervez Musharraf no longer has a valid identity as his computerised national identity card (CNIC) expired on June 30, 2014.
As per record of the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra), Gen Musharraf’s CNIC was issued on July 12, 2002.
According to the record, the former military ruler was born on August 11, 1943. The CNIC bears his name as “General Pervez Musharraf”, son of Syed Musharrafuddin. His CNIC states that the current address of Gen Musharraf is “Army House, Rawalpindi Cantt, tehsil and district Rawalpindi.” Whereas his permanent address is “House No 25 Askari Villas, DHA, Karachi.”
Sources in Nadra confirmed that the CNIC of Gen Musharraf expired on June 30 and the former president did not apply for its renewal.
They said after the expiry of the CNIC, Gen Musharraf cannot open or operate bank accounts and his existing accounts can also be frozen.
He would face problems in travelling abroad because having a valid passport and CNIC is one of the requirements for visiting any foreign country. In addition, Gen Musharraf cannot apply for the utilities such as gas, electricity and water connections.
But sources close to Gen Musharraf said the expiry of the CNIC was not a big issue and it would be settled within a couple of days.

Lets be honest, how many ordinary Pakistanis are living without valid CNIC or have never applied CNIC. Accounts frozen, what a joke? He can apply CNIC at his own discretion.

@imranrahbar The point is that our print media helps out to give all the information to terrorists they needed incase, so they don't have to do any work . Why can't our print or any media exposes the home address of any terrorists, their father full name, their date and place of birth and their temporary & permanent address etc.

It's amazing to see that a leading newspaper is completely ignorant of the NADRA's rules and regulations and has tried to make a hill out of a mole.
According to this news item, Musharraf's CNIC expired on June 30, 2014 and he was born on August 11, 1943 ___ means the CNIC expired when Musharraf had already crossed the age of 65 years and NADRA has clearly stated that "Senior Citizens" need not renew their CNIC ; it remains valid. See NADRA's clarification in Dawn of May 7, 2009:
"...............Moreover, a letter has already been sent to all banks, financial institutions, government departments, security agencies and institutions, which require CNIC verifications, informing them that senior citizens, 65 years and above, are exempted from CNIC expiry and are no longer required to have their cards renewed unless an update in address or any other detail is needed"

Musharraf may need a new card for change of address, but that doesn't make such a big news and has nothing to do with his travel plans.
If the paper has some moral guts it should publish a corrigendum.

General Musharaf is 70 year old is a senior citizen as per current laws of the land. The senior citizen does not have to renew their expired CNIC .

If every Pakistani has CNIC than why there is long queue in Nadra offices, not all people go there for renewal. Also why we forgot that PM has support from Army. Single call from general to Nadra director will solve the issue in seconds!

What nonsense, I am saddened by this report in Daily Dawn, this report would have been more appropriate in eveningers or those newspapers or channels given to sensationalism. I know for certain, as my mother is 70 and her CNIC expired 5 years ago, that senior citizens over 60 are exempted from renewing their CNIC and the notification is available on the NADRA site, I submitted the same to Bank Alfalah, they not only accepted it but changed their internal rules. This report was only a filler to fill space and create unnecessary hullabaloo, shame on DAWN.

@Rasool Hoodbhoy - that is true to an extent. Those issued their CNIC before the introduction of the law, have to renew it once to get the "valid till death" added to it. All CNICs issues before the law had an expiry date. I believe this rule applies to people who are over 60 years.

After Maryam Nawaz got divorced, a NARDA team was sent to her residence to make a new NIC with a changed name and instead of husband her father's name was substituted. What's wrong with a similar team going to the former President of Pakistan's residence for a new NIC ?
