KARACHI: Electricity was restored in 40 per cent of the areas in Karachi after remaining suspended for several hours today, DawnNews reported.

Electricity was restored in the areas of Clifton, Gizri, Nazimabad and some areas of Gulshan after restoration of 62 grid stations whereas complete resumption of power supply is expected by 4 pm.

Earlier today, electricity was suspended across Karachi as well as in several parts of Hyderabad, Jamshoro and other districts of the southern Sindh province due to the development of technical problems in the National Grid Line.

Due to the power breakdown, several water board pumping stations had also stopped functioning as a result of which electricity supply to Dhabeji, Gharo, Nak and Pepri pumping stations was suspended. Consequently, water supply to different parts of Karachi was also interrupted.

According to television reports, feeders tripped in Karachi’s areas of Saddar, Defence, Clifton, Burns Road, Lines Area, Gulistan-i-Jauhar, Korangi, North Karachi, Nazimabad, Federal B Area, Liaqatabad and North Nazimabad.

However, a K-Electric spokesman said the entire city was without power. The spokesman said that electricity supply had been suspended all across Karachi due to the tripping of production units, adding that the KE administration was in constant contact with the National Grid.

The spokesman said KE's board production units had tripped due to the tripping of production units in the National Grid.

On its Twitter account, KE said restoration of power may take a while and refrained from giving an estimated time.

Governor Sindh Dr Ishratul Ebad has taken notice of the power breakdown in the provincial capital. He said the public should be taken into confidence over the power breakdown so that there is no unrest on account of any confusion.

The governor added that in view of Jummatul wida, efforts should be made on an emergency footing to restore power in the city.

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement's coordination committee also took notice of the power breakdown in Karachi and Hyderabad.

The party condemned the situation, saying it was imperative that both cities had uniterrupted supply of electricity.

The committee said concerned authorities should ensure that power is restored to both cities as a matter of priority.

A thermal power station supply line in Jamshoro also caught fire due to which electricity was suspended to several parts of Sindh.

The power breakdown in Karachi came as the city received light monsoon showers on Friday morning. These began at around 7:00 am and went on intermittently in different parts of the city.
