Khursheed Shah proposes four-year tenure for government

ISLAMABAD: Opposition leader in the National Assembly Syed Khurshid Shah proposed a four-year-long tenure for the federal and provincial governments elected through polls on Tuesday.
The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader was speaking to media representatives in his chamber in the Parliament House.
"Present government may complete its five years," Shah said, adding that the proposal for a four-year-long tenure should come into force from the next term.
Shah, who was speaking on election reforms, said that if the suggested proposal was implemented, it would resolve most political, democratic and governance-related problems in the country.
Shah strongly backed the "constitutional proposal" which he presented and said that it was pitched after in-depth consideration and consultation with party leaders.
In Pakistan's parliamentary structure, as mentioned in the Constitution, national and provincial elections are supposed to be held after every five years. The general elections of May 2013 saw the first democratic transfer of power between two elected governments since independence in 1947.

The term should further reduced to three years only. The incumbent government will hardly settle down which will be helpful to decrease the ratio of corruption in the corridors of the powerful regime.

It is a very good suggestion. Mr. Shah is proving to be one of the most reasonable politicians. We should also have proportional representation and directly elected senators. There should be a term limit for PM and for every MNA and MPA. Best if it is per family.

Introduce presidential form of Government and hold elections for half seats one time and the other half after 2.5 years. Members of parliament should only be voice of people and accountant. There should be no provincial government, the local administration should be run by MNA through govt appointed Mayor (To be choosen from senior officer of Police, Government Schools etc) of the constituency. The elected President should be answerable for whole country and Elected MNA for his/ her constituency. This procedure of MNA, MPA, Nazim, AD is just to blame eachother.

First logical and matured proposal from any politician. If accepted and approved by the political parties, will be very beneficial for the country. less time and mo;re work will keep any government on the tows to act fast.

Very nice proposal. This is the best way to keep floating without any disturbance from dictatorship and have an elected government being accountable to public. I would say, for next 20 years; we should even do 3 years for parlimentarians.

This is the best proposal I have heard in years....The problem with five years is that government usually start development work in the last two years while wasting first 3 years to do noting...This will introduce the To-Do-Nothing by one year which would be a great achievement...

Four year term is in step with other countries, which makes more sense.
The real solution is presidential form of government, which has more checks and balances. The politicians will not do it, because it does not favor them. The public has to ask for referendum.

10,5,4 or 3 years will not make any difference until we make our electrol system fair and fool proof, appoint qualified people in government positions, clean up judiciary, media and political system, elect educated, qualified and corrupt free politicians (ameen & sadiq) -- not sure how many centuries will it take to implement these measures in our country?

For the corrupt politicians even 4 month is more but for honest & true leaders really committed to serving the masses 100 years is OK. As for Khurshid Shah he along with his comrades comes in the first category of 4 months
