KARACHI: Country’s ace golfer Shabbir Iqbal carded the best round of five under 67 to spring a surprise while recapturing the Rs 5.5 million UMA 19th Chief of the Naval Staff Open Golf Championship at the Karachi Golf Club on Sunday.

Shabbir, whose name has become synonymous with the CNS Open for winning most titles since its inception, finished with a four-day aggregate of 277, 11 under par, to win by four shots over overnight leader and contemporary Mohammad Munir.

Shabbir, who had a bad run in the event last year, turned the scenario with his exciting performance in the last round to grab honours.

Overnight leader Munir, who came close to fetch the crown, squandered it as he shot one over 73 to amass 281, seven under par.

Mohammad Tariq finished third with 285, three under par, while trio of Imdad Hussain, defending champion Waheed Baloch and Mohammad Ashfaq settled for joint fourth place with 286, two under par.

Meanwhile, Karachi’s seasoned golfer Waseem Rana captured the amateur’s title. He mustered 299 from four rounds, 11 over par, to beat challenger Zulfiqar Ali by two strokes.

Shabbir fetched top prize of Rs606,480 besides glittering trophy from the chief guest Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Asif Sandila at the prize distribution ceremony.
