Every time Brazil is in possession of the ball, traditional Balochi music blares out in the area surrounding Gabol Park in Lyari. Neymar doesn't even need to score a goal to send the hundreds gathered in raptures. A mere glimpse of the young Brazilian forward is enough for the men squatting in front of a huge screen, one of a dozen around the streets of Lyari for the Samba Boys' 99th appearance at the World Cup against Mexico .
Few can match the passion of the football aficionados in the violence-plagued area of Karachi, but locals say it would be nothing compared to the emotion that would be on display if Pakistan, one day, qualifies for the World Cup.

Excellent video. And very true about the sporting credentials of the Lyarites. Its just because they do not come from affluent families/background/localities, they and their sporting talents receive step-motherly treatment from the powers ruling (or ruining) sport in Pakistan.
Give them a chance & they will do Pakistan proud in Football & Boxing for starters, with Track & Field following in a short time

It would indeed be very interesting to see 11 men from Lyari making up a Pakistan squad!.....they should invest now considering the success of the kids at the street child wc

Pakistan will play in World Cup when Brazil will play in the Cricket World Cup. The odds are unreal for both.

Excellent video! Indeed, Lyariites have been subjected to bad media publicity and because of the infighting between gangs in lyari, the area remained backward in all aspects. However, sports is one thing that they are proud of and Pakistan also takes pride to have such talent in football, waiting to be unearthed.

although it would be wonderful, I think its a bit much asking for the government which cannot fund schools properly to dish out money for football. This should not stop local Pakistanis from creating a ground and setting up their own football clubs with local sponsorship money. local businesses can advertise and sponsor such clubs as part of their marketing.

Focus must be on finals for SAARC tournament, before it can dream of WorldCup.

Put excellent elementary and secondary schools in Lyari and get rid of gangs. Then see how Layari transforms itself into a neighborhood that rivals defense and other posh localities of Karachi in just 3-4 generations.

You will go to world cup if you do not depend on the Government. Government will do nothing. You can still do it if you say" I will fight with all odds to build a team from Lyari that will represent Pakistan in World Cup". This is the spirit we need as Pakistanis to do anything good in this world. Our Pak Government is for the benefit of those rich Pak families and their relatives.

@Magister Ludi: It can be done. When I was a boy, 50 or 60 years ago, football (soccer) was seldom played in the U.S. American football and baseball dominated. Now, the US World Cup team (with assistance from 7 dual nationals) is on the cusp of getting into round 2. Our cricket is still not up to international standards, though.
(5 of the dual nationals seem to be German-Americans born in Germany. A popular Brazilian dual national who chose to play for Spain has been shunned and denounced and efforts have been made to revoke his Brazilian citizenship.)

@Akram why is not psossible? if all the 400+ federal parlimentariancs/cabinet ministers (not to mention provinicial) contribute portion of their TA/DAs and forego imported cars, we will surely have enough to start a training camp. It is a matter of perspective.

Govt. will not do anything concrete federal or provincial. In my view Najam Sethi should be given in charged for Foot ball Federation and some private funding, the dream will definitely become true.

An impressive video. People of Lyari are crazy about football. Locals have hoisted flags of World Cup participating countries in their houses. The passion for football in Lyari is unmatchable. I think football is more structured in Karachi. Karachi have 600 registered active football clubs which is more then the cumulative number of clubs in whole country. I hope government wake up to the reality and shift headquarter of football federation to Karachi. The strategy of setting up head quarters of all Sports in Lahore is hard to swallow. Pakistan is a country of 180 million and passionate sports follower and talented sportsman are present in other parts of the country. Standard of football in Pakistan will only go up when people at the helm of affairs work hard with honesty and dedication

Pakistan needs to invest more in sports besides cricket. Like field and ice hockey, football/soccer, squash, tennis etc...
