LONDON: Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain was returned to a police station in Britain for questioning on Friday after spending three days in hospital, officers said.
Mr Hussain’s arrest at his suburban home in London on Tuesday in connection with alleged money laundering sparked protests in Karachi and other parts of Sindh.
A spokeswoman for London’s Metropolitan Police said that following his arrest, Mr Hussain had been allowed to attend a pre-arranged medical appointment on Tuesday.
“At the request of medical professionals, he was kept in hospital until today,” the spokeswoman said.
“The release back to detention was agreed after consultation with the hospital responsible for assessing his medical condition.” Police refused to give any details of his hospital stay.—AFP
Earlier, DawnNews reported that the MQM chief had been cleared by doctors at the hospital where he was being held before being shifted to the police station.
Meanwhile, workers and supporters observing Youm-i-Dua in Karachi prayed for Mr Hussain’s early recovery.
Imran Mirza, the acting Pakistani high commissioner to the UK, had said on Thursday that police would question Mr Hussain after he was discharged from the hospital.
