LAHORE: The Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) has decided to take part in the sit-in to be staged by its ally, the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), in Islamabad on May 11 on the issue of alleged rigging in last year’s general elections.

The decision came after PTI chief Imran Khan contacted JI emir Sirajul Haq by phone to invite the party to take part in the protest.

The JI discussed the invitation at a meeting during which a majority of the participants said there was no harm in participating in the sit-in, Jamaat secretary general Liaquat Baloch told Dawn on Saturday.

He said a delegation of the party, led by some senior leaders, would participate in the sit-in. “Our workers are at liberty to decide whether they should take part in the protest or not.”

Commenting on the PTI’s allegations about poll rigging, Mr Baloch said both the winners and losers seemed to be unsatisfied with the results of the elections.

According to another JI leader, the party’s delegation which would participate in the PTI protest would be led by its Naib Emir Mian Mohammad Aslam. “The emir and secretary general of the party will not take part in the sit-in.”
