SUKKUR: Former taluka nazim of Tangwani Mir Ashraf Ali Bijarani and a community elder, Samoo Khan Malik, jointly chaired a tribal court (jirga) in Ghulam Rasool Golo village near Tangwani town on Monday to settle a six-month-old honour killing dispute.

They imposed a fine of Rs2.1 million on Mohammad Hanif Jakhrani and his nominated associates for killing a man, Mandost Malik, and injuring Hidayatullah Malik, Rehmatullah Malik, Arsala Malik and Lal Malik, in an armed attack. An FIR was lodged by the aggrieved side at the Dera Sarki police station after the attack and both sides had been attacking each other over the past six months.

The jirga heard the two sides and found the Jakhrani group guilty. A number of people from the rival communities attended the proceedings and endorsed the jirga decision.

Hanif Jakhrani paid Rs400,000 to Arsala Malik on the spot and promised to pay off the remaining amount in four instalments within a period of four months. In turn, the Malik group undertook to withdraw the case.
