LAHORE: Regional office of the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) once again on Sunday warned all cable operators in the province to strictly follow its laws or face legal action.

The fresh warning was part of a campaign launched against cable operators violating Pemra laws regarding relaying banned satellite and private movie channels, and operating beyond authorised area.

Pemra asked the operators to immediately stop relaying such channels and remain within the prescribed limits regarding CD channels.

The operators were also directed to restrict operations to areas mentioned on their licences issued by the authority.

In case of any violation, strict legal action, including confiscation of equipment, imposition of heavy fine and even cancellation of cable television licences, would be taken.

A Pemra spokesman said its sub-offices in Gujranwala, Faisalabad and Sargodha had also started taking action in this regard.

The authority's field staff while inspecting various areas and cable operators had confiscated a lot of equipment relaying excessive/unauthorised CD channels.

The concern is that if the government is thinking of cutting costs through the merger, we might even lose the functionality levels we currently have.
