LAHORE, Aug 21: The Punjab University’s Bachelor of Arts and Science (BA/BSc) annual examinations for 2013 results, declared on Wednesday, showed 37.28 pass percentage down from last year’s 39.85.

According to the preamble to the result notification, as many as 134,880 candidates appeared for the BA, BSc annual examinations. Of them, 50,281 candidates were declared successful. As many as 84,599 candidates (62.72 per cent) were declared fail in the examination.

The girl students have continued stamping their authority by earning five out of six top positions in the examination. All the three top positions in the science group (BSc) as well as two positions in the arts group (BA) have gone to girl students. A boy, as a private candidate, has secured second position in the BA examination.

On a serious note, no candidate from any public sector college has earned the top position. All the three top positions in BSc have gone to girl students studying in Punjab colleges in Gujranwala, Faisalabad and Sialkot, while private candidates have bagged all positions in the arts group.

Overall gender-wise pass percentage also shows that the girl candidates outshone boys with 43.075 pass percentage. The boys’ pass percentage stood at 25.182 per cent.

The BA/BSc annual examinations for 2013 results were declared by PU Additional Controller (examinations) Ahmed Ali Chatha at a prize distribution ceremony for top position holders at varsity’s Al-Raazi Hall Undergraduate Block, Quaid-i-Azam Campus.

Sadaf, daughter of Muhammad Ismail, a student of Punjab College for Women, Civil Lines, Gujranwala, (roll number 021914), earned overall first position as well as top among science students with 706 marks out of total 800 marks. Last year, the overall top position was won with 688 marks.

Sadia Nawaz, daughter of Muhammad Nawaz of Punjab College of Science, Faisalabad, (roll number 015142) secured second position with 699 marks. Gulfam Shahzadi, daughter of Abdul Aziz of Punjab College of Science, Sialkot, (roll number 124414) bagged third position with 684 marks.

In humanities group (BA), Maria Nawaz, daughter of Muhammad Nawaz, an external candidate from Toba Tek Singh, (roll number 018736), bagged first position by scoring 669 marks. Muhammad Fahad Arshad, son of Muhammad Arshad Aziz, an external candidate from Lahore district, (roll number 084208) got second position with 666 marks. Chand Hayat, daughter of Muhammad Hayat, an external candidate from Gujranwala, (roll number 020204) stood third with 664 marks.

According to the break-up of regular and private candidates, the preamble to the result notification says 35,263 regular candidates appeared for the exam. Of them 19,353 candidates were declared successful showing a pass percentage of 54.88.

Similarly, 91,694 private candidates appeared for the exam and 28,167 got through with the pass percentage of 30.72.

Mr Chatha said the examination centre superintendents, examiners and university monitoring teams reported cases of alleged use of unfair means against 1,359 candidates.

Speaking on the occasion, PU Acting Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Liaquat Ali announced that the Punjab University would offer free education to the position holders.

Acting VC Prof Ali presented cheques worth Rs100,000, Rs75,000 and Rs65,000 as cash reward to the students who attained first, second and third positions, respectively, in both groups. Prof Ali, who is controller of examinations, also announced Rs200,000 for examination staff.
