ABBOTTABAD, Aug 15: Heavy rains and ensuing floods claimed lives of eleven people besides damaging roads and bridges in Hazara division and other parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and tribal South Waziristan Agency.

Five people were killed in different areas of Abbottabad district, while property losses had also been reported from various localities.

Floodwater swept away the house of one Mr Hussain at Changi Bandi, Havelian, leaving his two sons and two daughters dead.

According to reports, one Hanif had built a protection wall for his land which diverted the flow of floodwater towards the house of Mr Hussain, a resident of Changi Bandi. The floodwater washed away Mr Hussain’s house on Wednesday night, resulting in the death of his two sons and two daughters. The deceased were identified as Nazakat (18), Sadaqat (20), Shama Bibi (17) and Saima (22).

Sources said that earlier on Mr Hussain’s objection a jirga of local elders had asked Mr Hanif to remove the protection wall, but he refused. They said that the marriage ceremony of Shama Bibi was fixed for Saturday. Her household items were also washed away by flashflood.

The Sara-e-Saleh police have registered a case against Mr Hanif under Section 322. In Nawan Shehr, Abbottabad, roof of a house of one Sher Afzal Khan collapsed, which claimed life of his daughter Alya (5) and left his son Suhail (6) wounded.

Link roads in Galyats and surrounding hilly areas were extensively damaged. The floodwater also entered houses in Malikpura, Kunj, Banda Dalazak, Ram Bagh, Shiekhulbandi, Hassan Town and Kakul Road. Property losses were reported from Bandi Mera, Namli Mera, Kala Bagh, Jandar Bari, Bara Hoter, Dhamthore and Lambi Dheri. Most of the link roads in these areas were closed due to landslides.

In Mansehra and Torghar districts, two people were killed in rain-related incidents on Thursday.

Mohammad Taif, a resident of Chakwal (Punjab) was hit by a heavy landslide in Kaghan valley. He was taken to a nearby hospital, but did not survive.

The victim and his friends were on way back to Punjab after visiting the valley in a convoy of motorbikes when his motorcycle was hit by a landslide.

In another incident, one Rafiul Haq was killed when his house caved in due to heavy rain in Dadam village of Torghar district on Thursday. Local people later retrieved his body.

In a rain-related incident near Miramshah, North Waziristan Agency, four people were killed.

The heavy rains in different parts of the tribal agency resulted in flood in Tochi River, which swept away four people. Local people later recovered their bodies from the river in different areas. They said that the victims were collecting firewood when the floodwater swept them away.

The flood in Tochi River also extensively damaged a link bridge in Kanigwalgod area and a fish farm in Bangidar area.

The rainwater also destroyed standing crops, vegetables and fruit orchards in the agency.

The tribal people have demanded of the government to declare North Waziristan as calamity-hit area.

Parachinar and parts of Kurran Agency also continued to receive heavy rainfall from last three days. The rain paralyzed life as several houses, roads and link bridges were damaged in the agency headquarters and surrounding areas.

The main bridge in Mahura and Agra Bridge in Shahra were also damaged, creating problem for motorists. Dozen of houses in Sultan Uzbek, Sameer, Shaluzan and other areas fell due to rain. Besides, the rain and floodwater also destroyed vegetables and standing crops in various localities.

Laiq Hussain of Sultan Uzbek said that his seven-room house collapsed, but his family remained safe.

In Mingora and Swat district, torrential rains and flash flood caused damage to standing crops and houses on Thursday.

According to police, roof of a house collapsed at Balogram area, leaving three brothers injured. They were identified as Mohammad Iqbal (10), Mohammad Bilal (13) and Mohammad Yousaf (18). The latter is said to be in critical condition and shifted to Peshawar.

Engineer Bakhtiar, focal person for flood situation in Swat, said that inflow of water at Khwaza Khela area was recorded at 26,290 cusecs in the morning and 19,571 cusecs in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, a portion of safety wall of Swat River at Engarodeharai area, near Mingora city, was damaged by flood causing damage to crops and houses at Odu area. Bakht Rahim, a resident of Odu, said that their was immediate need for repair of the damaged protection wall, otherwise floodwater could cause massive destruction.
