KARACHI, Aug 14: The city received scattered showers on Wednesday, beginning in the afternoon and continuing into the evening, with district south getting the heaviest amount of rainfall.

Though the meteorological department did not foresee heavy rains in the metropolis in the next few days, it forecast rains for upper Sindh and some other parts of the province.

The department said the maximum temperature in the city dropped to 30.5 degrees centigrade and the minimum was recorded at 27 degrees centigrade. Humidity was 78 per cent.

The rainfall recorded in Saddar was 3.5 millimetres, in Landhi 2.5mm and in Nazimabad and Faisal Base 1mm, and traces were recorded in almost every district of the city. Sewage overflows, however, set alarms bell ringing for the municipal authorities amid fear of more monsoon rains.

Chief meteorologist Tauseef Alam said that light to moderate rains were expected in Karachi in the next few days with no signs of heavy showers. He said some parts of Sindh were likely to receive heavy showers within the next 24 hours where a monsoon weather system had developed.

“These areas include Hyderabad and Mirpurkhas, Sukkur and Larkana divisions, where widespread thundershowers are expected within the next 24 hours,” he said. “In Karachi, the current trend is likely to continue with most areas receiving showers and light to moderate rain in a few parts of the city during the next few days.”

His forecast also echoed in the daily ‘weather advisory’ issued by the Met office which said scattered rain-thundershower with isolated heavy falls were likely in Sindh. Heavy rains would generate urban and flash flooding in vulnerable areas of the country, it added.
