THIS refers to news in the media regarding plans to deal with smuggling in the country. Pakistan needs to take a more proactive approach towards the issue and devise an action plan accordingly. The nation needs to show unity in combating the problem of smuggling. No single agency can accomplish the task.

The proposition of a joint task force partly addresses the issue as it calls for collaboration between multiple agencies such as Customs, Police and Inland Revenue. Other stakeholders such as the private sector, civil society and even the common man should understand their sense of responsibility in helping curb smuggling.

Private companies can play their part by honestly paying taxes and duties to the government.

These companies should also work closely with the government in identifying and eliminating criminal elements in society. Civil society should create awareness in this area.

Citizens should say no to smuggled products. It is the consumer approach which supports the black market for such products and promotes criminal activities.
