REFERENCE news item ‘Case against five guards of Zehri registered’ (July 20) wherein the chief justice of the Balochistan High Court took suo motu notice of the incident involving Sanaullah Zehri’s guards and the police.

He expressed dissatisfaction over the conduct of the police for not registering a case against the guards of Mr Zehri.

The matter is sub judice so I would not like to comment on it except that it would have been much better if the emphasis had been on why the police did not register a case against Mr Zehri himself and his five errant guards?

In the same breath, your reporter has also reported that the Balochistan chief minister ordered the suspension of Quetta’s SP Samiullah Soomro. What on earth was the chief minister thinking?

Punishing the police for doing their duty? He has destroyed the very morale of the law-enforcement agencies and the next time the SP and even the IG will look the other way whenever such an incident happens.

That is why suicide bombers manage to slip away again and again. Now this was something where the chief justice of the BHC should have taken a suo motu notice. I am glad that the police protested against the highhandedness of the chief minister. What an unfortunate message has the chief minister sent out.

Where was the speaker of the assembly? It was his duty to take action against Mr Zehri for not complying with the general norms practised by all lawmakers.

And the PML-N should also have initiated disciplinary proceedings against Mr Zehri. But the big fat names, a term coined by Ms Chinoy, will keep getting away for flouting the law of the land. And we will keep looking the other way. The question is until when?
