MQM stance

Published June 4, 2013

APROPOS the editorial, ‘Bridging the divide’ (June 1), may I submit that one of the biggest parliamentary achievements of the last century has been the role of the opposition. It has been formally recognised and given a due place in the parliamentary system.

Treading carefully, by upholding the golden principle of checks and balances, the treasury and opposition both, in a participatory democracy, do not create a schism, rather generate an atmosphere reverberating with an aura of peace, tranquillity, harmony and the well-being of the people.

Lest the parliamentary system falls prey to the tyranny of an absolute majority, the MQM in its determination to thwart such a remote possibility has opted to sit on opposition benches, not to oppose everything and propose nothing, but to play a positive and constructive role to uphold and strengthen the democratic norms with unflinching intrepidity.

Let it be known that the MQM shall neither vitiate the spirit of participatory democracy nor in any way entertain any such move that may threaten the solidarity and integrity of the province of Sindh.
